I was inspired to write this piece after seeing the movie, Diary of a Mad Black Woman. I thought it was a powerful statement of faith, redemption and recovery. Hope you enjoy the poem!
Eighteen years
I suffered died and was buried
With you
So many times
It became a weekly event
When your life didn’t go well
I was crucified.
But I tried not to complain
Because I knew Jesus suffered
So why wouldn’t I?
You made me put my mother
In a nursing home
Because it didn’t fit your
Vision of the American dream
To have her live with us.
And then you threw me out
For another woman
Who you had children by
While denying me children
For the sake of your career.
My diary captured it all
The betrayal, the pain, the injustice
Yet …
I am no longer
A mad Black woman
Bitterness has been replaced
By love
I was resurrected
And perfected
By my suffering
And then blessed with
