Introspection
As I sit here in this aging body
Looking back upon my busy youth,
I ponder on where life has taken me,
My experiences spelling my life’s truths.
Where have all the glorious yesteryears flown,
Those fruitful days of bright new thrills?
On silent wings fading memories flown away
Like yonder and faraway, foggy distant hills.
My first teenage birthday party
With lots of friends, food, and mirth
The games we played, the presents they gave,
Those simple pleasantries akin to perpetual rebirth.
My first glorious date to the drive-in movie
My first dry kiss upon my youthful lips
From the guy whom I believed would surely love me
Until my heart started doing flips
for other guys.
More dates, more kisses, more rejections
Finally finding my once in a lifetime special one
A diamond ring he put upon my finger, followed by
A wedding ceremony in the warm March sun.
A baby boy placed in my hungry arms
To have, to hold, and to love
A tiny speck of sweet humanity against my chest
Given me straight from God above.
Now I am old, my son a man,
Death has touched so many whom I love
I watch as youth travels the life
Where I have been before.
The grand festive seasons appear and are gone
Like a fast-moving vehicle carrying me along
A day, a month, a year, and years
As I ponder from where I’ve come.
