They Lost Their Dog

This happened yesterday. I gave mom a copy of the poem, and although it is very sad, she really appreciated it.

They Lost Their Dog

It was such a beautiful sunny day,
The air softly filled with a gentle breeze.
I walked outside to check the mail,
The early pollen making me sneeze.

The cute little neighbor girl
Came speeding past me to her door,
Yelling for her mother to come quickly
Her voice screaming in a pitiful roar.

Mom, young son, and  small daughter
Came rushing down the steps real fast
When their feet hit the ground
I stood watching as they ran right past.

“Not my little dog,” Mama screamed.
And the boy boo-hooed awfully loud,
The little girl looked pale and scared
Like the sun going behind a cloud.

I stood listening to shouts and weeping
As the three raced down the road,
With tears and pain erupting like rain,
Pouring on young shoulders a heavy load.

The young boy came running back alone
Weeping in a loud hurtful shout.
“They killed my dog,” he cried and screamed
“They killed my dog,” kept pouring out.

I saw mom and daughter come walking back,
In a funeral march real slow
No one was saying anything now,
And the silence seemed to grow.

Mom held the little white pup
Cradled gently in one arm
No movement came from the little dog,
It would never suffer further harm.

Mom laid the tiny dead dog
Down upon the ground
They made calls to people they knew
And folks started coming round.

Soon the little dog disappeared
Someone took him away
Resilient like clay the kids bounce back
Today they’re busy at play.

Very sad, Jeanette. The loss of my dog is still fresh, so I feel for this family. They become part of the family rather quickly! Love and Hugs,
Sheila

So sorry to lose a pet by accident and more by death. I cannot replace my little cocker spaniel Joy dead 3 years now, but would love to try and love anohter dog sooner and maybe I can but this says it all. thanks

In my heart, I feel the loss of their little white pup. Our pets, you know, become more than pets. Many become an idolized member of the family, and their loss is tragic.

Yes, the kids bounce back. But don't be fooled. Many kids will recall the incident with soulful memory many, many years down the road and perhaps even cry at that time over their loss.

If you have any tenderness in your being at all, a tragic loss will be with you forever.

But your poem pointed out the right thing to do, Jeanette: Make the calls and do the things that give the pet the respect and dignity they have earned. Your children watch and learn.

God created and gave life to every creature on earth. I believe each is entitled to respect. And then we move on.

Thank you, Jeanette. As always, your words touch me.

Love to you,
Richard

Such a sad day for the family, this is even a sad event for adults. You've penned it well my friend. You are right also with children and their pets, they are resilient, they bounce back I think more so than we adults do in this type of situation. You have a heart full of cherity my friend!

Jeanette,
Oh, how sad for the family. I have a little black dog. I don't know what I'd do if something happened to him. He light's up our world.

Blessings to you,
~Linda

Oh that poor little dog and his family, but kids do bounce back quickly though, but I wonder how mom is? I would be heartbroken if we lost our dog that way.
You've penned this very well Jeannette.
Hugs, Laura
