I believe that an unstructured mind leads to an unhealthy state; thus, the inspiration for this poem.
My Mind’s a’Thinking
I’se been sitting here on my doorstep
My tired old chin propped on my fist Watching the evening sun go down Another day settling into the mist.
I’se got no where to go, nothing to do
Just a’sitting here busy a’thinking Wondering where all my life has gone to
Popping my beer and a’drinking.
Watching shiny cars go speeding past Young busy folks rushing to and fro People on the run to do what they do Excitedly reaping the seeds they sew.
Where have all the years gone The days of youth and joyous surprise I don’t want to dwell on that old grave yard It’s the place I most despise.
Here comes my old neighbor Most everyone calls him busybody Fred Likes to spout off his good advice All that crazy stuff about the head.
Get up off your bottom, man Says Fred after he greets me with “Hi”, Get off your fat arse, my friend, And quit yore self-pitying sigh.
Go take a long brisk walk Sweep off yore dirty driveway too A mind’s a terrible thing to waste When you let it run idle like mixed up stew.
Work will get that old mind a’working Good thoughts and energy all abuzz That brain can’t take lots o’resting Like that old arse of yore’n does
A mind’s got to be plenty busy Thinking of things that you do, If you just sit and let it wander It’ll just about get the best of you.
You gotta steer it like a car
Tell it where you want to go Make it think what is good for you
Or you’ll have a long hard row to hoe.
So get off that old fat arse of yore’n Team it up with yore mind like a chile Find something worthwhile to do in life And it’ll shore nuff make you want to smile.
Sometimes it's nice to relax and be lazy but that's definitely not a way to live life. An authentic feel to this poem, thanks to word choice and imagery. Great write! I agree with good ole' Fred!

Where does time go? It's as the bible teaches us...life is as a vapor on water...dissolves before our very eyes...seems as when we were children the days were long with plenty of time to complete all of our exciting projects, playing, exploring, imagining...but as we grew the days seemed to shorten...now it's nothing for a year to roll around, when in our youth Christmas or a birthday seemed an eternity to arrive...now it's here before we have recovered from the packing of the decorations and as my father in law would say, before we can get our bank accounts feathered up it's here again! Time...quickly it comes and quickly it goes...I guess that is why we should live each day to it's fullest...wonderful write...has a melancholy feeling...makes me crave the days of youth, not the teen years though...too emotional. Enjoyed my friend!

Jeanette, this was such a wonderful writing and I got such a kick out of it. Made me sit back and enjoy a good laugh. Life is exactly like you've described and always someone giving us advice. I don't want to look at that dang grave yard either with all those stones engraved with names. I also look to see the youngsters ride by and sit for an hour and day dream about those younger days of mine...oh, this is a good one!

Sleepin' in the noonday sun?"
