The Root of Arguments

This was inspired after a conversation with someone who debated an opinion I stated, (that had nothing at all to do with them personally) and they became angry when I wouldn’t revise my belief.

The Root of Arguments

What exactly is an argument?
How does an argument begin?
I know for sure it takes two people
For a conversation to have a disagreeable end.

It’s all about two individuals’ emotions
And their different opinions, it seems
One believes one thing, the other another,
Debating angry words in irritated steam.

It’s also about an individual’s perception
How one person interprets what another says
If a sensitive button is unintentionally pushed
Temperaments can flare up for many days.

Some people are more sensitive than others
Their worlds revolving around the egotistic “I”
They are prepared to debate every opinion
Until the peace-maker lets the conversation die.

Can we keep opinions out of conversation? Should we?
Or is it a personal way of expressing who we are?
We know that trying to change another’s opinion
Has sent many a man rushing to the nearest bar.

People’s knowledge is nurtured with opinions they form
Which changes with increasing knowledge gained each day
Opinions are peoples’ base for scientific hypotheses
Allowing pathways to new learning along the way.

Thus, each individual is inherently a scientist
Conducting mental experiments to process change
Forming opinions daily equal to individual knowledge
Learning and growing and revising old opinions in exchange.

If you choose to debate another’s opinion
You not only debate the thought, but also their plane of intelligence
And you might as well be telling them outright
Their mental capacity is sadly dense.

Could it be they are smarter than you
And you haven’t caught up with them yet?
Or, if you are smarter than they are
Then they haven’t caught up with you yet?

Neither! No one is ever on an equal mental plane
With another human being’s opinions
Since opinions furnish a map or framework
Of how far one has come in their mental pursuits.

Individual thinking, beliefs, and formed perceptions
Are what makes each of us different and unique.
“I think”, one of the most common terms we know,
Spells out who we are and all that we seek.

So, when you find yourself disagreeing with anyone
You’re never going to win an argument then
By disrespecting the other person’s right
To share who they are through their opinion.

IT TAKES TWO TO ARGUE...AND THE WORD OF GOD SAYS 'A SOFT ANSWER TURNETH AWAY WRATH' IS NOT AN EASY THING TO DO ESPECIALLY WHEN EACH ONE KNOWS THEY ARE RIGHT (SMILE). BUT HONESTLY, RESPECT FOR ANOTHER'S RIGHT TO THEIR OWN OPINION IS DEFINITELY THE ANSWER. GREAT WORK...DONE WELL AND THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE,

Jeanette -
You have made many wonderful points and references here in this Important poem!
My last feeling during an argument is "ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS" and I say it often, but during an argument - tensions do tend to increase, when a nerve is struck! YOU raise many thoughts!
GREAT Poem and Wisdom!
Warmest of Blessings! Love and Light SHEExooo

Stay Positive!
P.S. I may not get to yours/etc. poems right away, but when I'm on your heartfelt page, I STAY AWHILE! I must...

Thank you Jeanette. You have said here what should have been in everybody's thoughts anyhow, but aren't. When you have 10 different people talking on the same subject, you have 10 different opinions. And you are so right too, that no one is smarter than the other when it comes to having an opinion. What can be done to avoid an argument? I have been told to simply walk away, but in some instances that is easier said than done.

This poem was written from your heart Jeanette. Well Done. A 10 if ever there was one.

May the Lord Jesus bless you, and those whom you love and who love you, and be with you always, and at your side constantly. With much love in my heart, joy to the world, peace on earth & ((((((((((MANY WONDERFUL SISTERLY HUGGGGSSSS)))))))))), your little sister, Barbie

Jeanette, your career in education is certainly showing here, for sure. This opinion thing can really be a problem when a low self-esteem person stresses an opinion and someone says they are wrong. They feel personally attacked, as if they have been assaulted. No debate possible with them. The best you can do is respect their right to have an opinion, realizing that they, along with their opinions, will grow with experience. You put a lot of effort into this detailed poem. Nice work :-)

Whenever I'm involved in a conversation and I give my opinion, I always preface it with, "I think," and it amazes me sometimes how angry people can become simply because I do not agree with their opinion. Your poem brought this point out beautifully, Jeanette...and we are all individuals who all have varying opinions...part of what makes the world go round!
