Only When Needed
Verbalizing feelings and emotions
Wasn’t a way of life for my loving family
Or other farm families whose lives
Revolved around carving out a living
From the plowed sweet-scented soil of the earth.
“I love you,” wasn’t a frequently used statement
But I sensed and felt its presence
In a hundred different ways,
As my mama and daddy strove to give
Me and my siblings the best they could.
Mama claimed she liked the chicken back and wing
As we reached for the fleshy chicken pieces at mealtime,
Never realizing that Mama’s unselfish love
Nurtured her willingness to go without
Just so her children could have larger portions.
Then there was daddy, a man of few words
His energy burned from worry when the rain didn’t fall,
Fearing the crops would not survive or flourish
Troubled that his family would starve
Without the funds from the sale of the crops to feed them.
Talk was about work and livelihood
The here and now of the world as it related to us.
Love was inherently as much a part of life as breathing
And expressed in all the things done for each other
While words were used like special tools
Only when needed.
