This actually happened during my first year of teaching...I have now taught the first grade for five years and am continually amazed at the funny and amazing things that students say...
Children Say the Darndest Things!
Standing before my students... one bright and sunny day, Faced with the challenge of teaching about a budget! For first grade, this would be tuff! Who knows what a budget is... I finally heard myself say! Looks of confusion swept the room as well as dismay, silence hung thick in the air, while I awaited an answer... an answer from someone... an answer from anywhere. Finally from the back of the room the answer came. I know! the little dark eyed girl did shout! Thank goodness, I whispered. Yes, I said with a smile as I called her name... full of confidence and not a shread of doubt... she proudly stated... A budget is a thing that you put against the door...you know so you can't budget it open!"

That's funny. My cousin was teaching, and one little boy went to Canada for a vacation and went through customs. Mary asked who knew what customs was. A tyke answered, "That's when the Irish wear grean on St. Patrick's Day."
LOL, this is both adorable and delightful, Joyce! Kids really do say the cutest -- and at times most clever -- things. This little girl was very smart to come up with that answer.
