One has only to listen to hear the call of the seagulls.
Grand Old Ship.......
Great ship of the seas how proud you stand,
from stem to stern so beautiful, so grand.
Gliding through the sea as if riding on air,
each scheduled port knows you will soon be there.
This grand old ship cutting through the ocean,
stands tall and eloquent maintaining her motion.
Sails fully open, anchor locked at your side,
old and young shipmates begging to ride.
How proud you look, it sure must be nice,
gliding above the water as if on thin ice.
The ship is swaying, the waves are knocking,
listen for the fog horn, the buoys are rocking.
With wings of angels you majestically sail,
shiny and bright, all other ships pale.
The next port you reach with a hop and a skip,
unload all your cargo, ready for the next trip.
The air is chilly, cold mist kisses your face,
piercing your body without leaving a trace.
Dolphins out front leading the way,
seagulls above an omen for a good day.
Someone yells out from the bird nest above,
land ho! land ho! as he takes off one glove.
Better climb down, get ready, make haste,
all shipmates on board have no time to waste.
You draw the reader into your story with rapid fire, excellent poetry; you make them care if the ship reaches its destination. This reminded me of my cruise two years ago--a grand ship, indeed (all except for the first night out, all those w a v e s *and my girlfriend left the seasick patches IN THE VAN--nice*).
Ahhh this rings of times gone by, Karen. There is so much romance in those times and so many rich stories to be told by those who sailed most everyday for their salary to support thier family. As gorgeous and beautiful as the sea can be, she can also be wicked and over-powering and those stories are a great read also. I have read stories written by the wives of these men and usually they include lines about how she will, one day, lose him to the sea, but that she could not ever ask him to give up doing what he loves for she fears that he loves the sea even more than he loves her. Living asea is a passion of most who do it. Beautiful poem that really took me on a lazy walk through all the stories I have read.

Sherry
Wonderful word-imagery here, Karen -- your love of the sea is evident as you paint your poem in tones that enable your readers to "see". I enjoyed.

In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
