              Moment in time.....

Walking slowly up cobble stone steps,
into the shadows of what came before.
In the dark an old Victorian style home,
resting peacefully along the seashore.

Ocean creeping up closer and closer,
with each ripple a moment in time lost.
Heavy mist forms around this old home,
exposing the toll time has cost.

Seven graceful gables line the roof,
green ivy wrapping around maple trees.
A swing still attached, once well used,
now it sways with a gentle breeze.

Heavy wooden door warped and worn,
screen door rhythmically swings to and fro.
Grass has grown, shrubbery needs clipping,
rainwater drips with a steady flow.

Fireplace still full of ashes and soot,
broken furniture covered in sheets of white.
Brown wet leaves cover the wood floor,
with every step small specks of light.

An empty home yet, full of memories,
dusty photographs lining every wall.
Frozen in time with something to say,
nameless men and women eerily call.

Spiral staircase with banister of wood,
into a bedroom with feather bed and toys.
Wooden rocking horse, cradle lays bare,
forgotten trinkets for girls and boys.

Carried out to fields of colorful heather,
sounds of children's laughter is everywhere.
To romp and play in warmth of summer,
promises to make, break and share.

Sweet scent of honeysuckle permeates,
every crevice through walls and floor.
Muted whispers of familiar voices,
conjure images of life lived long before.

karen - there is some expression a house is just a house untill a family makes it a home. - empty or getting ready for something new can have a great feel to it, I can almost smell the honeysuckle. Morgan

I think I lived there. Well, except for the coblestone steps, the ocean, the seven graceful gables, the fireplace and the spiral staircase, but I did grow up in an old house with lots of great memories. Love the magic you weave into the telling of it. OBTW, I absolutely love you’re your site. Thanks Dick

That is why it is so sad to see "old" houses destroyed in the name of progress and development. One day last year I was cycling past our "old" house as I had done so many times. The next day when I came by, the house and the barn were completely gone; they had been smashed up and trucked away. Such is the ways of men in this uncertain world/life. Thank you, Karen. Love and best wishes,

Regis
