you spoke to me in whispers under the cypress tree twilight was just emerging bleeding like my wounded heart the cicada's were singing frogs croaking in between as the swamp nearby sent its messages i didn't want to listen to you all i asked for was solitude you wouldn't grant it to me it was over, but you didn't believe me i felt something crawl over my foot i made not a sound or a move what a difference from what i used to be the struggle of loving you toughened me
but your loving me was too much to bear perhaps it's what you call love, not me total control, jealousy, constant arguements like the one now, you don't want to let me go it's time to leave this swamp night is upon us i won't stay here after dark you know that yet you try to hold me here making threats is that what love is to you hurting me?
the moonlight shines off your handsome face the one i adored but no longer want to see you smothered and punished all the love out of me a man passes by with a dog who starts barking i turn and leave hoping i will not be stopped the man is talking to you, as i get in my car you try to get to me before i drive away, but i don't hesitate i'm gone...
You capture perfectly and beautifully that moment when wisdom overpowers the captured heart and Reason prevails.
Excellent work as always.

Wow, sounds like a close one, lucky the escape was done! So many realitonships can turn into such painful turmoil. A terrible end of a once great love, but a new beginning for a precious life.

I love those Cicada nights...
And I have been there, were you were too, there is nothing worse than a claustrophobic love...
It always withers and dies...
Great write
Lady poet, this is really good. It struck some chords in me, for I have been in such a place and time. Composition wise, your imagery and rhythms are splendid. Normally, I find works set in all lower case distracting, but your use of it here meshed well with the emotion and flavor of the poem...giving the reader a feel of looking inside your head as a silent, internal dialog ensued. Excellent work.

Annd that, my dear, is how I finally walked (drove) away from you. This one was special.
sometimes its necessary to just drive away from relationships that are one-sided and self-edifying ... i totally agree with the premise of this poem, i've been there ... you develop this poem with powerful emotion and vivid imagery ... really well done!

Eileen - I see myself completely in this poem. But from the other person's side. I am the smotherer. Although, I'm not much of a threat to anyone. But still...I can see myself in this. Thank you for helping me understand what I've done. I feel even sadder now. ~ Sara
I would be WAY gone...moved out of my place before he could find his way there to try and convence me that I should stay. Why is it that men like that seem to have such a strong hold on our heart? We want to hate them, but that is never possible, we want to leave them, but even when we do, the memories of them haunt us. We remember the times when we knew that this was the real thing for us, the love that was going to fill our life. Then day by day he tries to strangle the independence out of us, then comes the belittling so that we become insecure...they have developed the system of breaking us down down, to a fine tuned science. By the time we finally get the strength to put some distance between ourself and them, the damage done is so severe that it will take us months, possibly years for us to trust and to find our self again. A write that I wish I could say that I don't identify with, but I certainly do. Excellent write!
Take care,
Sherry
