What was I looking for at 3:20 A.M.
sitting in my recliner unable to sleep
my thoughts turned to Billy Joel's
"River Of Dreams" wrenched my soul
I searched for the CD and put it on

I can't explain how I felt as he sang
the past came back with a bang
my thoughts exploded with truth
which I found downright uncouth

It wasn't what I expected, a matter
I had buried so deep, it was forgotten
a piece of my past that was too rotten
now I had to face it ,and put it to rest

I anguished over the ways of Creator
to make us acknowledge our wrongs
one way or another, it's either or
still I know where I want to belong

So in the middle of the night
I went searching for part of the soul
that someone stole,and took it back
even though it almost made me crack

a long held relationship that I had to toss
I had held on even though always one-sided
years wasted to keep it alive, how hard I tried
I wonder if i'll be able to live with the loss
