We were a Military family as like thousands before us, we soon became adjusted to the many postings, the making and the leaving behind of many friends we made on each move. You hold some dear to your heart and never let go. The children soon forget the frustrations of starting a new school as they met up with new friends and often running into old ones along the way, Through the years we all learned one thing, Home is where we hang our heart and there has been a good many places over the years that had become our home. The Military had given us a wonderful life and the children many opportunities that they would have never had as civilians, such as living in the many provinces and the tolerance they got along the way.

Home Is Where You Hang Your Heart

Through the years, we travelled a lot,
Far across the wide open earth,
You see we were a Military family,
Like many,we soon came to know,
Home is where you hang your heart.
We were use to making friends along the way,
Knowing that one day, the tears would shed,
As we left behind the many friends,
Through the years that we had made.
The children would start new schools,
Always being the new kid year after year,
At first it would upset them,
After a while it seemed they never cared.
Like us they came to realize, this was Dad's job,
And this would be our way of life,
That home was where you hang your heart,
For Dad, the kids and his loving wife.
One day they wopuld go their own way,
But for us, we would linger on,
They would marry and settle down in a home,
But we'd go on to find where we belong.
As they grew, we began to grow old with age,
Soon it came time for him to retire to,
Not knowing how to relax, he signed up
With the Reserves, for something to do.
So our moving days are over,
But he is gone more often then before,
I find myself still waiting and watching for him,
Like so many times, as he come through the door.

The beauty of this poem is evident in each line as the authour tells it from the heart what it is like to be a military wife and mother.
Roots are fine and most people associate them with houses, places and neighbourhoods but the truth is like Rose states in this poem where you choose to call home is determined by the ones you love the most.

Wonderful write and it is good to be back reading you again dear Cuz

A sweet story in a poem and the title is a lovely metaphor. A well-wrought rendition of a life well led.
