Having always been afraid of the dark, never was my favorite holiday. But as an adult, I learned to relish all the little ones at my door and my boys' imagination for their costumes.

The hospital in our town offers to X-Ray the children's bags of candy to look for foriegn objects for free. Sad ain't it?

Yep, I just love them little critters, ghosts, goblins, princesses and pirate, plus all the new costumes. My favorite are the 'home-made' ones, they are always made with love and time.

Very timely. Much of my teen years and as a young pastor I participated in "Trick or treat for UNICEF." I felt good about seeking help for children around the world instead of just begging for candy. thanks for renewing the memory.

It's so sadly very different than when we were kids. I would stay out for hours after dark, sometimes even returning to the same houses more than once, and parents never worried about us at all. I think kids today truly are missing out on many wondrous things, including Halloween.

Halloween should be more fun and better than when we were kids. Unfortunately, that is not what the history of what we call this holiday is all about. If we as parents would learn to leave the horrors out of this holiday maybe we could make it a fun time again. To allow our children to dress up as devils, demons, witches, goblins and other horrible characters and creatures brings it back to the times when this holiday WAS about the worship of false gods and animal sacrifices. To promote Halloween as a horror filled night today only invites the problems that we now see. We can easily blame Hollywood for this but that really isn't the problem. We as parents need to control what our children dress up as and even watch on TV. I have been blessed with five children who now range from 30 to 8 years old. Never did I allow any of them to dress up as a devil, demon or any other character that represented anything to do with horror, evil, violence or crime. Not even pirates are allowed because even they represent WRONG DOING. And no kind of pranks are ever allowed. A simple excerpt from my poem TRAILS OF FOOLISHNESS is probably the best way that I can explain it:
CHILDREN, DON'T DO ANYTHING,
THAT MAY SOMEHOW HURT SOMEONE;
YOU WILL LOOK BACK LATER ON IN LIFE,
AND REGRET THE FOOLISH THINGS YOU'VE DONE.

WHEN ANOTHER IS HURT BY A PRANK,
FOR THAT PERSON IT'S NOT FUN AT ALL;
USE THE COMMON SENSE YOU'VE BEEN GIVEN,
YOU ARE THE ONE WHO WILL MAKE THE CALL.

BE KIND AND LOVING IN ALL YOU DO,
DO WHAT'S RIGHT, TAKE A FIRMER STAND;
THE WELFARE OF ALL IN THIS CRUEL WORLD,
MAY ONE DAY REST IN YOUR VERY HANDS!

By all means, let's make it a fun holiday. The sooner we realize that WE are a part of the problem in what we allow, the sooner we can make it a better time for EVERYONE involved. I can remember "soaping" a neighbor's car windows when I was a kid. NOT WAX, just simple Ivory soap; washes right off; an innocent prank. NO! Not to the victim who had to drag out his garden hose and wash it all off. The poor old guy was hurt and angry and I don't blame him one bit. Remember, a prank isn't innocent if someone is hurt or put out by it. We have to draw a line somewhere. Sorry to ramble on. HAVE A HAPPY and SAFE HALLOWEEN.

It is a shame, isn't it? One reason why I don't celebrate it (dress up, but that's it, no candy for me!!), and I don't celebrate any holiday that takes precedence over CHRISTmas. Excellent write, well done, Rose!
