Being a great Parent should give one great pride. We raised five children, we always believed if we want respect we have to give respect. For them to know that we had to give it first after all we are going to be their guide for a good many years. We always gave them the freedom of speech, for they won't always agree with us but they too entitled to their opinion plus it gave us the chance to explain our reasoning. We never said NO without an explanation, if they said No to us we would want to know why. They always knew thruth was the best policy, it saved alot of hurt and pain. My advice is Be the greatest parents possible, remembering that SOME children do have a mind of their own but we can hope they follow the direction we try to lead them.
Be The Greatest Parents
Give love unconditionally,
No matter what you do.
Show them a great respect,
They’ll give it back to you.
Let them have their say,
To a certain degree.
It will mean a lot to them,
That you will plainly see.
Children need to learn,
The way that we once did.
You teach from the start,
Remembering they’re only a kid.
They’ll try to push your buttons,
See how far you’ll let them go,
They soon accept your tone,
When the final answer’s NO.
Just be the greatest parents,
Never put them down.
You’ll find that they & their love,
For years will be around.
Children need an understanding,
From the ones they do adore,
So be the greatest Parents,
They won’t ask for anything more.
Be the PARENT! Sadly, some parents give in so they don't have to ... I agree, a good parent listens, gives love and respect and instills these qualities in their children.

my children also were allowed to say "no" to me yet as a Leo, I demanded it was done with a smile on their face. Good words here. Lady J
And when someone says you are lucky because your son/daughter has turned out so well, tell them it wasn't luck, you worked your butt off for what was truly worth working for--a wonderful adult.
I look at my boys this last year and I could not be more proud. Some of it stuck good.
A great poem of advice and wise parenting skills, sometimes thye won't always work but we as parents can only do our best. We also shold mention that children each have their own personalities and quirks and there is no direct plan or guidebook that works for every child. best advie that is given is to just keep tryint to do our best.
Those that can look back and say we did well are the ones that should set the height of the bar, because we have too many "experts" telling us how to be a parent (when they aren't)

Rose, such a beautiful poem. As a mother I have to say, I did give my children the respect and unconditional love. I have three grown children and all three love to hang out with mom..even with their friends..I love it..I also know that if I needed anything they would be there, and that my dear friend is just wonderful!

Excellent advice Rose and so well put in a poetic lesson. My youngest daughter (now 24 years old) gave me a plaque for my birthday a few years ago that meant so much to me and made me feel I must have done something right as a parent. It read "Anyone can be a father but it takes someone special to be a Daddy." Yeah, I cried. I hope I do as well with my 8 year old boy Jon.
