So many people suffer with so many ailments today and they seem to have a name for each one. Alzheimers is the one I write of today, the one which steals your memory and cheat you of your life.While away I had the pleasure of spending time with one of the most loving, happy ladies in the world. Pearl, she stole my heart and all I wanted to do was hug her.
Just For Today
I stopped by today to visit you,
You welcomed me with a smile,
You held a stuffed dog close to your heart,
And you loved it as a child.
I put my arms around you,
I kissed your cheek so tenderly,
I could feel the love within your heart,
You gave so willingly.
Your hair it shone like silver,
Your smile as big as the sky,
With tears I fought to hold back,
Asking God above, tell me Why?
We walked to the little chapel,
To sing to the Lord up above,
Sharing with Him your precious time,
Your heart so filled with love.
So just for today remember,
Your children and the love you share,
Just for today darling Pearl,
Remember those who love you and care.
Tomorrow is just another day,
A moment in time we all forget,
Just for today thrive on the love they supply,
For life is too short for regrets.

Just for today... for the now Pearl inhabits, be it for a fleeting instant or an hour... This touches me deeply, the love and beauty you are able to share in the NOW, irrespective of what seems to be faded or lost or hopeless. Her beauty shines within the picture and your words... and your enfolding love for her within the honour, respect and affection of this poem. Love enfolds you both in the moment... but forever. A sad disease and Tom's mother died of it, and so many are getting it. They do ask the same questions over and over again. Much care must be given them and very watchful over them. This lady is amazing holding her stuffed animal. Glad you shared her with us. My prayers go out to you and Pearl tonight. She is also a pearl of great price, that came to mind as an ending.
This is absolutley beatiful Rose,,My Husbands Aunt Ophelia who raised him does not recongnize him now,, as she suffers from Alzheimers,, truly so sad.

A profound and beautiful write my friend. My mom is a caregiver for a long time family friend who was also my fourth grade teacher, not to mention my favorite teacher. She also suffers from alzheimers disease. It's such a sad disease...she is eighty six and physically does very well, she actually loves to talk about the old days, I mean the really old days of when she taught in one room schools. She can tell every detail, the dates, children...but will ask the same question a dozen times in an hour. Your write is wonderful and heartfelt, your warm spirit shines through with every word! Well done!

The caretakers are angels that God sends to those whose mind has been stolen and you are one of them. Great pic and poem. Its true this disease brings out the violent side in some but they are not aware of what they are doing or saying.
As this write and the picture that accompanies it are of my dear mother in law I especially was touched by this write. Pearl lived with us for over twenty years till here illness forced us to have to put her into the nursing home where she now resides. She was a mentor, a friend, a drinking buddy at times and a dam good card player. Thanks Rose for honouring her so with this write.
