Thinking about the elderly as I visit them and take notice of their hands as they hold mine. I can still feel the strength and the warmth of the love once shared with their loved ones.

Worn Hands Of Yesterday
January 18, 2009
Written By: Rose Marie Rideout

Worn hands of yesterday,
Teaching us to survive a certain way.
Hands that once were so strong,
To our parents they once belonged.
Wrinkled and dry yet still strong,
Still filled with warmth, never gone.
Hands that once held us close,
Letting us know they loved us most,
Embracing us each and everyday,
Teaching us, leading the way.
Those worn hands wiped out tears,
Held us close from all our fears.
Still today remain the same,
Given us so much, we’ve gained.
Soon forgotten the love they’ve shared,
The way they’ve shown how they cared.
I see those worn hands of yesterday,
I feel the love now fade away,
I’ll shed tears for those hands once so strong,
Forever missing what once belonged.

I can really feel this one, Rose, as I just visited my dad today at the nursing home and was looking at his hands thinking how strong they once were, how useful, how caring ... and now they are so fragile, almost small and frightened. Very emotive piece, well done Rose! Hugs, Elizabeth

Life is such a brute...
BUT...Love ever present inside your heart definetly makes this world a better place Rose, and all those folks you visit have a brighter day too!
It means the world to them, it really does...

Then again, the image of the hands of my grandmother is imprinted in my memory, the caresses, the warmth, the kind-hearted feeling given.
Thanks, not all memories are bad.

Dear Rose, your poem is real and strong. You revived in me all those hands I once held in my hands. They are full of love and tenderness. You gave a great expression, not only about those hands of those grandmas and grandpas. You are talented, keep going, as those hands will once be yours and mine. Thank you for sharing, Love Emile

I so wish my own mother had of lived long enough to have aged hands, her hands were rough from doing laundry on a scrub board, splitting wood to get a wood stove running, scrubbing floors with a wooden scrub brush and other tasks that kept a family of 11 surviving. Yet to have those rough hands in mine today I would give anything.

I never realized how warm those hands were, till they went cold and went away! Good one, Rose. Sentimental and touching poetry. Just your style.
