The Immolation Of A Butterfly

- (hated for its colors?) -

Wasted years
for a chrysalis
who fought so hard
to escape hungry predators.

Once a butterfly,
you saw her fall
into the candlelight
and the room now smells
of burned, scaly wings.

The inevitable quest
for a better, peaceful life
- in a garden lovingly imagined -
ends well too soon.

- It is dangerous to reach
a certain degree of perfection;
it is not love you attract,
but greed and possession -

When the butterfly's remains
are embraced by warm wax,
you finally see it rest
in sad, lifeless quiet
(after the storm, the maelstrom).

You see, darling,
in an eccentric butterfly's life
there's no room for simple dreams.
You need to be an ordinary bug
to find comfort, go unnoticed.

Too much challenge
and the world's aggressive.
Sometimes, being who you are
is enough to cause
competitive, angry stings.

If you are telling me
that it's better to be envied
than pitied - just think
how envy bites and poisons.

Death by immolation
was the deed of a feeble mind
and a trembling hand,
both unaware of the hate
that left the flame to harm.

The hand wanted to take
all it could not ask for,
all it could not give.

- I wish that there was someone
who'd want a butterfly to live -

Darling?

Being who you are sometimes brings stings with it from others, Dense people who do not even care about themselvs. They are like those butterflies and bugs, not creator to look up to, just themselves to dwell in misery with. I wish thre were more poeple around me her that want a butterfly to live.

Can't help but to think of my own "little bug" while reading this -- it's exactly the kind of advice I would like to give her -- she's such a beautiful, fragile, flighty little thing, and yet so eccentric. If anyone hurts her...grrrr! Dream of a pussy-willow forest with thousands of butterflies gliding about--flower petals for their matress--for their blankets, the dropping pollen. -- a gentler world. Keep her safe, but whole, whoever the "she" is. --Charlie

Very intense and interesting parallels drawn between the butterfly and the heart.

The loss of such beauty of a butterfly--or anything--is a terrible waste as you've said in your poem. I feel there is lots of symbolism in this poem, as though an appeal to be allowed to be oneself

Sometimes, being who you are
is enough to cause
competitive, angry stings.

Axilea,

The thoughts are so sad. Woe is the devastation of not being allowed to accomplish what one was meant to do. Blessed are You in Verse My Friend Always, Paul.
