- Boxes, locks and safes just to hide from your inescapable self -

Olfactory memory;
Odor molecules
That go straight,
Oh, straight to the brain.

Yet…

Not a teardrop,
Not a litany,
Not even a lemon ice cream
From the box labeled
“Past”.

Is there a light
To let me see
Its contents and feel
Precisely the way I used to?
(you know, human)

Meanwhile words fly
Like stones thrown at my face
Bollywood stones - empty inside -
Thrown by the aggression
Of a fake personality.

I sit and think
About the lie
And the pretended new start
Of a life made of polystyrene.

Looking at a man
I thought simply imperfect,
I now see a puppet
That holds his strings
While I check my wings
And see if I’m ready to fly.

Store pain in the apposite drawer
Don’t you own a safe for your
Compromising stuff;
Don’t you mistrust yourself
Enough to run/hide from others?

The more you flaunt,
The more you lose
The self-respect that you gave up
The day you decided
You weren’t good enough
To love yourself.

I touched them in the dark
They were dry and fake
Contact lenses
Like condoms
Between you and the world.

An outstanding and accomplished poetic task. "The Empty Parade" is rich in imagery and contents.

Riches and worldly goods do not make the person, a heart of goodness and a soul filled with the love of God does. Worldly goods come and go, but a true heart filled with love of self and fellow man continues on....

Be safe,

what a provocative write. . .full of conundrums and paradigms at each strophe, each ink bled spot of truth. .. .

(((Axilea)))

You bare a soul that's been wounded and put a barrier (condom?) between your heart and the world, to protect your sanity...that's the impression I got reading this...such sadness...well done.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

It is a hard battle from loss of worth to loving oneself and this write with each stanza painting a picture of hurting shows that so well. Very good Axilea

So often we waste our time planting plastic seeds in fertile ground. When hope is made of resin, it cannot grow. We eat mayonaise strait from the jar because it says fat-free--but all it is, in reality, is creamed and flavored vaseline. And we wear condoms too--upon our eyes--our hearts--our souls, thinking nothing good could ever grow there in the confines of a lonely, baren being. But we are wrong. Our soil is fertile. Tiny, healthy worlds are sprouting there--spinning on their polar axis, waiting for their own discovery. If we looked through our own safe-keeping drawers, we'd see hidden there, beneath the every-day underwear, the lace handkerchiefs that bear our name. Let's take them out and tie them 'round our heads so we don't forget our names--that we are real flesh and bone and blood and spirit--hewn from the same stuff that gods were made of--that there are tiny worlds under our skin--and we are the creators of them. Let's fling the empty words against the wall, and shatter the mirror that isn't really there. --Char

Your poem awakened these thoughts in me.

We think we've found him. Yet, did he ever really exist? Was he a figment of reality or just a dream? Why did we/I give so much? Was it fake? So many questions are left in the wake of loss.

God bless you. Kathy
