EGG

While running -
Her legs brushed
By a thousand blades
Of friendly, ticklish grass -
She found
A calcium carbonate paradise,
A stable cosmos
Of enclosed possibilities.

She almost stepped on it -
Almost - but now it was safe,
Safe between her hands.

So she imagined a tale
Of a world in danger,
A world she could keep safe
In the dewy palm of her hand.

She was in charge
of protecting the contents in the hermetic seal,
of letting it breathe through thousands of pores,
she knew she was.

Her face was like its surface,
Her soul like the treasure inside:
A beginning, a promise,
An egg...

Sitting on the wet grass
With gentle wind in her auburn hair
She thought of her mother
(with untrustworthy hands)
Dissolving an eggshell in a bowl of vinegar

Then, she was simply happy to be alive.

Hi Ax--dissolving in vinegar sounds eggscruciating. :) maybe safer in a cage.

Axilea - Enjoyed your simply and appropriately titled Egg. The perfect symbol for a young life. Especially liked:

Her face was like its surface,
Her soul like the treasure inside:
A beginning, a promise,
An egg...

But an egg, once having its shell dissolved,
bounces. --Auburn hair and all.
And I'm very glad to report that that is the honest truth.

Your poem made me think of the fresh and innocent beauty of a child. Even when children are surrounded by untrustworthy people wonder and delight can still be found in the blades of grass. Very vivid and touching. Thanks, Deborah

This write has such a stunning image set that allows the reader to see vividly the experience and the memory the child is feeling as it happens. Well done Axil.
