Sommeil Paradoxal

(rapid eye movement sleep)

Paradoxes help in unorthodox ways sometimes

And, although we don’t know much about how

Dinosaurs slept

And crocodiles cried

(I did not write “wept” for a reason

each rhyme is a treason… oh!)

Just because sleep and tears leave no paleontological trace,

I still recognize the typical signs of my reptilian brain,

I do not betray my race: human (too much at times).

As I close my eyes…

Tears have dried and sleep has come

As a surprise, velvety, taking me through its phases,

Rephrasing all with softer dreams

During my REM sleep,

Feeding, then soothing my paradoxes,

Exhaling, inhaling all that I am.

I don't believe anything escapes your pattern of thought Axilea...you find those deep interest which we all wish to either encounter...even sleep does not escape your grasp...the parralel of past and present caught up within your words of poem only finds us more and more... waiting for your next display...

nice work...

Some of your word choices remind me of that saying about things seeming better after a good night of sleep - "Rephrasing all with softer dreams" and "soothing my paradoxes". I like your show of humor towards the beginning, about the rhyme. That's something I usually don't see in your poems (the ones I've had the pleasure of reading) and its refreshing. Even here, your work takes on deep meaning within the playful lines. Nicely penned~

She breathed herself in, and came out in a sneeze--
wet, and alive, and smelling of breath,
she, beside herself,
in newer form.

With lizard tongue, she tasted the air

She stood, and wandered through her dreams,
(watch the tail...watch the feet
--they're massive and extinct)

She walked through lines of poetry--
and zzzzz's-- each phrase, a new phase
of herself--
a paradoxical dinosaur
feeding off of....

woops, she breathed herself in again...

There is a co-relation here, but it comes from deep within in trying to sort out that which exists, deep thoughts well expressed...

Axilea - I enjoyed this poem very much. Other than it's subject "paradox" (different sides of the same coin?), I admired your confident voice, not a weak line anywhere. I especially like the humor of:

(I did not write “wept” for a reason

each rhyme is a treason… oh!)

and the profond peace of thelast four lines:

Rephrasing all with softer dreams

During my REM sleep,

Feeding, then soothing my paradoxes,

Exhaling, inhaling all that I am.

In a word, "Wonderful." - David

Ancient slumber and opposing natures which I interpret as "crocodile tears." Someone's treason presents itself mostly in our our dream state - you wake up when someone is chasing you about to kill you or you almost jump off a cliff. There's a reason we wake up at that very defining moment...it scares us into moving on and leaving the past behind from those who have betrayed us...This has Jungian psychology written cleverly...studying Freud's dreams and Jung's dreams add up to Sommeil Paradoxal...I also note Darwinism here in that Darwin took the dragon lizard and hurled it into the ebb tide. It swam back to land again and again. No matter what he did, it would not stay in the sea. Axilea, this is a metaphor for concluding that the dragon lizard feared the sharks and came ashore where it had no enemies...sleep peacefully now.

Warmly,
Sage

I do like to dream and do most nights and remember them too. It is nice to wake up to a dream in the morning and believe that it will eventually come true if it is a nice dream, which mine mostly are. It must be what I eat before bedtime that makes me dream, I don't really know tho.
