Gray clouds fly
On chill winter winds
Leaving in their wake
Scattered flurries
And swirling brown leaves.
As painted horses huddle
In the corner
Of the paddock,
Their breaths fogging
About their heads,
Mists rise
From the meadow pond
Where ducks paddle,
Immune
To the near freezing temperature,
And black cattle graze
On hay rounds
Left
By a retreating tractor.
