Here is not
A comfortable place
To be,
For to be
Unemployed
And on disability
Is to open myself up
To the derision
And harsh judgment
Of those who don't see
A missing limb
Or any other
Obvious disability.
Their disdain breeds shame
And confusion
Within my heart;
I want only to do
What is right to do,
And, oh, how I have tried!
I've tried to work
And to live up to the expectations
Of society,
But I have failed
Through no fault
Of my own.
I would not wish
My condition
On anyone,
But I can't help wishing
That they could walk
A mile in my shoes,
Then maybe,
Just maybe,
They would understand.
