The nighttime hours

Pass peacefully by

While I recline sleepless

Upon my bed.

A lamp glows softly

From the table beside me,

Illuminating a book

Resting open

And almost forgotten

Upon my breast,

And reflected

In the depths

Of the chamomile tea

Cooling

In a delicate china cup.

I am not alone, however,

For a contented tabby

Lies curled against my side

While my Pekingese snores

Endearingly at my feet.

I love the serenity

Of the late night hours,

The respite they provide

At the end of a long

And often difficult day.

They bring balance

To my chaotic existence.

They bring harmony

To my very soul.
