The Show Must Go On

she plays the part so well
a woman in love and loved

but it’s only a part
a fairly easy one to play
and she is a good actress

she’s had years of practice

she’s weathered his storm
this time....but what of the next storm?

and there will be another storm
eventually..... because he’s not
the actor he prides himself on being

plain fact, he's not in love with her
probably never was
probably never will be

but he’s had years of practice

playing a leading man
covering his true emotions
with those called for in the script

pretending to love someone he doesn’t
accepting a big mistake
making the best of a bad situation

lying to her and himself
speaking his lines on cue
playing the love scenes like a pro

receiving rave reviews
and cries of “encore, encore”
from an enchanted audience

who have no idea he's dying inside

so...must the show go on
and on and on, the same dull play
until the final curtain call

when the mask comes off at last

and it’s too late to audition
for a better part?
