Black Suits
By La Belle Rouge

“Do you know Jesus?” They ask
while you silently ponder,
“Perhaps not the one you know
do they resemble each other?”

They tip toe around death beds
clothed in dark, tailored suits
and conservative ties
Whispering tired condolences
Seeking souls
to "Save"

Or members to add
to their bulging church roles
and money to their full coffers

All is so simplistic
The dying
inflicted pain on all he touched

But now all is well because
he told someone else's pastor,
a total stranger
he was “alright” with God

And so religious platitudes
and Bible verses about paradise
flow to soothe the grief stricken

While the black suited
smooth tongued cleric
never suspects their tears fall
more from the past pain
than the present loss

And you’ve had more “religion”
in three days than you can stand
in a lifetime, still you hope
he has peace at last

Numbed, you keep silent
and your tears
contribute to the grand illusion

The dead go away
(but never the pain)
"He has gone to eternal bliss
to wait his family reunion"
The man of God assures them

But the Bible verses
fool no one and you know
it's really the past
they need to be "Saved" from

And they’re not sure
they want to see him again

Black suits, black hearts. Authority given by man, not by God. God has been so commercialized, he almost looks like a Politician. Sad. You really put it out there, as only you can, Dear La Belle.

"still you hope he has peace at last" is the line in your poem where i feel an idea lives and the idea isn´t wearing a suit...may be they will have peace ´from the past pain´ having visited that idea too - plenty to think on in this write Belle, Nicky xx

LaBelle... only someone with your writing ability can spin such a wonderful creation out of a "black suit".... Assuming this was spurned from the funeral that you recently attended...it certainly hit reality from many aspects. I too need to believe there is a God...and altho I am a Gambler...I'd rather be safe than sorry...so for me...HE comforts me and guides me...not those men in black suits! Great write as is generally the case with LaBelle! lindalaw

And the debate goes on. Well said Belle. I don't look at myself as a Bible thumping Christian. Just a simple man who sincerely cares about ALL other people in this crazy world of ours. I respect everyone's beliefs regardless of what they may be. But the bottom line for me is this; I would rather live my life believing in God and Jesus and then die and find out I was wrong (?) than live my life not believing in Him and then finding out that there is a hell. What a terrible boot in the butt that would be. So I choose to believe. Either way my friend, a very well written piece.

Heartbreaking lines, La Belle. Those well meaning forget as soon as trouble arises...where are they, then, while their parisheners are yet living? Powerful, powerful -

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.

Wow, very intense write who would have thought you could get such intense feelings from a suit of black? But a very talented writer did just that. Fantastic, Love, Bonnie

Hey! aren't those the "Men in Black"? they don't come here to save you they are coming to take over our planet! naming Jesus is just a gimmick to trick you, like Leprechauns I thing they hide in the Pentagon cellar.

As an agnostic anti-organized church person I felt the frustration and the truth in this write. All too often bible thumping Christians forget the real meaning of love and life and the spirituality of man.

And you’ve had more “religion”

I've had more 'religion' in this election than I can stand. My 'Hate Mail' Box is overflowing right now with numerous so called 'Christians' telling me who I have to vote for.
