A Challenge Inspired by David Maclellan’s Fine Poem “When We Were Kids In The 60‘s”

Poem Artwork

David And I Would Like To Challenge Everyone To Write A Nostalgic Poem About Your Experiences As A Child. Whatever Era You Grew Up In, We All Have Memories To Share. Come On Now, It'll Be Fun And It's Ok To Admit You're No Spring Chicken!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When We Were Kids
By La Belle Rouge
We made dolls from corn cob silk
And drank cocoa made from fresh milk
Made snow sleds from old store signs
Braved the big hill and had grand times
Constructed stick castles in the wood
Listened to Grampa's stories when we could
In doll clothes finery we dressed our cats
At twilight threw dirt clods at barn bats
Told bloody ghost stories around a fire
Of the "Butcher Knife Saga" we'd never tire
On Sat. night Laurence Welk we'd see
Cause Parents had control of black and white TV
Danced to old record player's scratchy 78's
Church picnics, fried chicken piled on our plates
Ate homemade ice cream on a summer day
Hand cranked, back in the day it was the way
We swung on a rope tied to an oak tree
Mama would have had a heart attack to see
The way we flew over that deep ravine
You'd think we were dying the way we'd scream
Sometimes in summertime we'd sneak
And skinny dip like heathens in the creek
It was a good time to grow up in
Remembered fondly now by old women and men.
That music makes me cry. Guess I'll have to write my saga, too. Those were the days.
And now I have come to your own wonderful poem, a delight to read and remember. You were more daring than I, but I do have the distinction of climbing several feet up a high-tension electric pole (the square metal kind) before being ordered down by my Mom. Who told on me?
Thanks for the challenge--I sat at the computer and wrote mine, not caring about the rhyme or meter, so mine is quite a hodge podge, like a "come-as-you-are" poem.
job well done my dear poetess, maybe I'll try one, but I might get stuck on some bad times, like when I was in the fifth grade I cut all my eyebrows off, for quite awhile I walked around looking like a martian, my young life was so full of stupid, I'm just glad it's over, hugs
Thanks for the memories and inspiration to challenge. Never cared for Lawrence Welk, had a pile of 78's but lots more 45's. Patrick
a few memories of my own early days if I can reach back that far.
Thank you for all of your kind words that make me feel at home
What beautiful memories to hold on to. I was ten when my grandmother bought her first television. Think I spent more time watching the Indian Chief in the circle than I did television shows. She taught me so much, some of which I still carry with me today. Make my own bread, pasta, ice cream, tomato sauce. She used to sit me and the groceries in the side car of her motorcycle. Gosh, what a flood of memories...
Be always safe,
Karen
Fantastic Belle, so rich in the imagery of those wonderful, youthful days!
The challenge is there folks, I can't wait for your literary visitations to those by gone days where life was simple and kids fought dragons with wooden swords instead of a mouse!
Waiting for the memories,
David
Belle,youth and its attendant memories play the sweetest melody to aging bodies and minds attempting to cherry pick the best events of life. When simplicity wasn't a derogatory remark and truth had no politically correct interpretation. We took folks at their word and were almost never disappointed. Long ago and so far away. Joy irretrievably lost in the maze of time. I love your rendering my dear friend. I do not know if I am up to your challenge. May you always know joy, love and peace. Jon Michael
