The Prodigal left,
I watched him go
back up the mountain
from the valley below
My heart it ached
My tears they fell
I wished heaven for him
but he was bound for hell
Happy to be half-grown
and determined to be free
from rules and restraints
and a mother like me
A mother who cared
and stood between
her son and the dangers
from a world so obscene
The Prodigal left
I prayed he’d soon return
but I had sleepless nights
and many lessons to learn
about half-grown men
and their youthful desires
I could only wait
and tend the home fires
The Prodigal left
but one day he came home
Ragged and tired
thoughtful and alone
No longer a rebel boy
who had run away
a man of earned wisdom
had come home to stay
A mother's eyes keep watch always, Belle, and her heart and soul carry the pain and burden of struggle and separation. There are no shortcuts... what we fail to learn in youth manifests later in life, I'm sure, and can be even more painful and inconvenient to deal with. Sometimes in our lives, we have to reach out and follow the sun, to make our dreams and goals a reality, if we can. Sometimes we have to tread that winding road of life and learn our lessons the hard way or the best way that we can. Sometimes, we come to a dead end, through no fault of our own. Sometimes, all we can do is sit and cry for our dead dreams and goals that we failed to make our reality. Then sometimes too, we swallow our pride and go back whence we came and admit that we were a fool in the first place. This piece was written from the heart and makes the reader really think, and that is a good thing. Thank you for sharing.
