A forgotten entity imprisoned in a forgotten place

Poem Artwork

Forgotten Places
By La Belle Rouge

I wander these halls, these desolate halls
where once the laughter of children rang.
They grew up, went to war, died too soon
on distant battlefields... buried like dogs
in unmarked graves of abandoned places
uninhabited but for echoes of the dead.
Oh Darlin Sons, red earth now cradles you
and forlorn breezes croon your lullabies.

Days and nights are all unchanged, except,
I descend grand staircase without thrill
into an elegant ballroom of encircling oaks
and then I ascend once again into nothing.
I even miss my husband, eternally sleeping
in the field behind ornate, wrought iron gate.
Cruel man who held captive souls and bodies
of those he bought and sold like angus cattle.

There is no more music nor sound of dancing.
No wafting of candle flames into magic night
nor scent of magnolia, gardenia and mown hay.
No neighing of carriage horses or cattle lowing,
no baying hounds to pursue the pitiful red foxes
across vivid, wildflower meadows, green and lush
I am alone, except for low moaning of the wind
and sounds of another lifetime that haunt me.

Is this my Hell, my punishment, for not opening
the gates and sending them all across the river
to feel sunlight of freedom on their dark faces?
If I could undo, redo, valiantly rise to occasion
would I perhaps have done things any differently?
Once I was a memory, now I’m only a minor myth
of rotund, swishing skirts and verbena perfume
floating through halls of a lonely, forgotten place

There is no end to the beauty, even in the darkest corners of memories closet. Look to the light that brought you good memories and do not close the door on any of it, which is known well to most...the good with the bad...it is a "still life" telling its story. A painting which elicits...yesterday, by the pilot light of love.

I can not say for sure, but I think if I had it to do over again,
I might have gone to Canada when my time came to go to a useless war.

Belle, the ebb and flow of human emotions, tragedy and love forever circle the universe. We are continuously exposed to them and often relive them though they were not ours, consciously or unconsciously. Your pen orchestrated us through this tale of an apparition with the diversity it deserves. May love and peace be always be with my dear friend. Jon Michael

I like the mood music and the story her La Belle. I never could say for sure if there are ghosts, but some houses could be breeding grounds for such lost spirits. When I was very young ( I couldn't say myself because I was so young ) we lived in a Seemingly large brownstone house. The previous owner had hung himself in the downstairs bedroom. My mother claimed that she heard footsteps at night and some items were turned over that shouldn't have been. My only enduring memory is of the grape arbor in the backyard which seemed huge to me. Of course I wasn't older than 2 or 3 yrs. old. That might have been the closest I've ever been to experiencing a ghost I guess. I think I'll put up a poem I wrote a few years back that derives from an account one of my sisters related to me. I always wished to have a sighting like that, but I guess I never will. Liked your poem a lot. Good read. Bob
