In a sleepy Southern Town
on a tree lined street
a quaint cottage sits in a wood so deep
abandoned and neglected, it stands
no one to repair it
with skillful, loving hands
Vines running wild over chimney of rock
where welcoming home fires burned
broken windows in the library
where the family went to learn
sad and forsaken upon the wooded bluff
fairy tale cottage, diamond in the rough
Who made their life there? I wonder
how long did they stay?
why did they leave in that bygone day?
did their children’s laughter
ring through each room?
was their life together over too soon?
Built long ago, its roof now sagging
lonely through winter snow and summer dew
why languishing so long empty?
I want to dwell in that cottage with you
bright dahlias, peonies blooming by the door
restored to former glory once more
Diamond paned windows gleaming clean
barn hinges holding solid oak door
wooden window boxes with red geraniums
shiny heart of pine planks on the floor
chalet old, dream come true
enchanted cottage perfect for us two

the door. To hold again new memories for this
wonderful cottage.
Ohhh . . . This brought back sad memories of the house my grandparents worked and raised a family in. They planted cotton, not much because they didn't have two man acres. But they made the land work for them. When they died the place was quickly sold to people to make a deer camp out of it. When they abandoned the house it was left to the elements to claim it. I had many good memories there, it was a shame it ended like it did. Sorry, didn't mean to go on and on, but your poem brought it all back.
