Not Yet Broken

there was a time, how long ago, how long ago

I wore a white summer dress, dotted swiss

and a necklace with one small pearl pendant

a daisy chain crowned my long, copper hair

nails painted a pale pink, no lipstick, blusher

no stockings over my tanned legs, barefooted

when no one was looking, white low heel shoes

left on the creek-bank, I cautiously waded into

muddy, cold water, Mama warned me to avoid

barefooted, tender-footed, young and foolish

bare-hearted, ripe for the summer harvest

curves blossoming, imagination searching

foolish little girl anxious to become a woman

would that I had worn burlap and covered

long legs with tights and fair face with veils

better to have died young and never known

the wonders and abuses of wasted womanhood

there was a time, how long ago, how long ago

when laughter flowed spontaneously from lips

that had never been kissed and hope overflowed

from a naive heart that had not yet been broken

Yes, Belle, the innocence of childhood and the broken dreams
of womanhood...

Sweet youth when everything was magical pure honest and simple. Then come the revealing truths and disappointments of adulthood along with the good to make us relish the days of our youth now forever lost to the grip of time. Beautiful poem that made me recall many youthful events Belle, thank you. May love and peace be forever with you my very dear friend. Jon Michael

I DON'T GO BACK THERE OFTEN AND I THINK IT'S BECAUSE...I CAN'T REMEMBER A TIME, AS A CHILD, WHEN THERE WASN'T AN ACHE IN MY HEART. BEAUTIFUL IMAGERY, POETESS, THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

The princess is fearless when young and yearning for love. Unfortunately, this yearning does not always result in finding Prince Charming like the common fairytale. More likely the adventurous girl falls in love with a "bad" boy filled with thrills and excitement that, eventually, turns sour with maturity.

What's a girl to do after that? Continue to dream and in so doing, eventually find the man of her dreams to spend the rest of her life in contentment with.

Please pardon my extended interpretation…

As always, superb writing!

Ron
