When my youngest son grew up he had a car tag that read "Mama Tried."
A Mother
being the mother of two sons
is the hardest job I ever had
my first little son was born
when I was barely past childhood
I could see a universe of potential
deep in the blue seas of his eyes
when I held him for the first time
it was the closet to God I had come
tiny fingers curled around mine
that precious baby scent lingering
after I kissed his whispy curls
no instruction book came with him
what was I going to do with this
human I was now responsible for?
the second son, so tiny, so sick
was I going to lose him this early?
his blue eyes melted me with love
and the instinct to protect him
he survived, was always my happy boy
cooing and singing beneath the trees
on his blanket on the summer grass
later joking and making me laugh
the one most like me, a soulmate
I still miss those deep conversations
we would have, all night sometimes,
when he'd come home late from a date
was I doing right by them? I tried
too soon men with bearded faces
children of their own and such sad
broken relationships, I grieved too
and still wanted to take the pain away
but these were no scratched knees
I could fix with a kiss and a popcicle
had I really been a good enough mother?
would the things I taught them prevail?
I was determined not to be controlling
did I hold the reigns too loosely?
I prayed they would grow up with worth
now they are good men who will leave
honest legacies of love and friendship
a mother's influence remains after she's gone
Heartfelt words that I completely identify with La Belle...
We simply do our best...and keep on doing it..
Yes, I believe the legacy of Motherhood remains always...

Mothers are the roots for their children. One can do the best they can in teaching and loving. And I guess they will always be children to their mother and still worry about their lives.
WELL DONE, LABELLE. THAT'S ALL THAT GOD ASKS...IS THAT WE 'TRY'. THERE ARE NO PERFECT MOTHERS...WE OFTEN COME SO VERY SHORT AND SOMETIMES MAKE A MESS OF THINGS BUT...WE TRY. THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
Oh, do I understand what you say about wanting to "take the pain away". As loving mothers, we never stop wanting them to be happy. Such a touching and lovely write!
Only a poem abundant with real life experiences shared could convey the core of love your poem does Belle. The legacy we all hope for is filled with the love we guided our heirs with and to be remembered frequently and lovingly. You penned this magnificent poem from your heart and it is a thing of beauty. Happy Mothers Day, mother. May love and peace be always wit you my dear friend. Jon Michael
What a beautiful poem, La Belle. It sounds to me that you "did" do the best you could, and my, my, I was raised just the opposite. My (adopted) mother was a tyrant and would beat me (yes, beat me). She was a cruel mother. Happy Mothers Day to you.
in a single poem you have covered all the delights and perils of motherhood and I was afraid that things would not come out right when your son proclaimed for all the world to see that you had "Tried." And then, the ending told me, like my mother of four sons, two at a time, that you succeeded!
Everyone has their own destiny, even those two beautiful, inspiring and adoring infants you held in your arms. A very touching write indeed, full of emotion and meaning. Inspiring. John
(Richard M. Feldman) Ever since I was a young boy, the only thing I wanted to be was a cowboy. I wanted to own and work on a real ranch, with cattle and horses. Especially horses.
While I never became a cowboy, considering everything I have done
She never felt safe at home as a young girl, and didn't understand why when she finally escaped she wasn't safe in the big wide world either ...effectively jumping out of the frying pan into the fire!
