I hate to use Jerry's beautiful septcouplet form for this rant, but I've got to get this off my chest. This is probably going to piss a lot of people off, but right now, I don't care.
what part don't you understand illegal means against the law cut and dried definition you cry out for rights you don't deserve

you won't learn our language but expect us to know yours my grandfather came from the old country in order to work, be a citizen he had to learn English

Karla, I totally agree, and until corporate America ends its relentless quests for cheaper and cheaper labor, we're hamstrung. Sad, huh? Many of the people who are screaming the loudest are also quietly doling out the jobs and creating a social mess for the rest of us. And the linguistic problem is NOT just in the Southwest; try getting and keeping a landscaping job in Washington DC without speaking Spanish. It's maddening. Really great write!
BRAVO! I agree with you wholeheartedly. I have lived in a border town, and when I was there I was told I HAD to speak Spanish and I was in America. Nowadays I live in a small New Mexican town that has a large Spanish speaking community and we've started a Spanish page in our newspaper for them. There is still pressure for me to learn Spanish although not as strong as it was in the border town I lived in Texas.
I applied for jobs that said bilingual, not noting the language they meant was Spanish, as I speak German and was promptly told I did not speak the language of the applicants they wanted. I was not the right minority (Japanese, etc.) when I applied for an internship in college. I have even traveled and lived abroad and have always tried to speak my host country's language.
Most of our ancestors, mine included, came to the U.S. seeking religious freedom or for better opportunity or what have you, and look what we destroyed.
Everyone wants to come here to the U.S., thinking the grass is greener. But it isn't, and the people here are paying for it. I have talked to international students who come here to go to college because they get a better education here. Most of them say they want to stay and work here and some want to return home.
I don't know if there is a right or wrong answer to this problem. But I will say it will continue to be a problem.

I know your frustration. I see the big picture. From back in history to the present...The welfare system in need of major overhaul; the business men who depend on cheap labor to harvest their crops and work in their factories, mostly jobs we distain and why they supported and housed illegal aliens(I hate that term)for so long; the out-sourcing of labor to other countries for the bottom line at the expense of jobs for our citizens; the shamelessly low living standards of Mexico while the rich fill their pockets and the desperation of their poor.
I too, have been guilty of a knee-jerk reaction. But we have to put the blame where it belongs...

This poem clearly poemizes the disapproval of anyone that can’t speak the language that is not the language that the narrator speaks, and it is emphasized that the subject here is a Spanish speaker.
Spanish language was a major Native new born language in TEJAS/Texas until the Americans created the Sovereign State of Texas, and imposed their laws and the English language to the TEJANOS. Thus, we should respect the right of the TEJANO to speak the language that is more convenient to express their feelings.
In accordance with the state laws, all public offices and OFFICERS must provide information in English and Spanish, and inclusive in the Courts and Schools.
Anybody who lives in the Sovereign State of Texas/Tejas – and is not born there – is an IMMIGRANT or EMIGRANT. That is simple: Texas is a SOVEREIGN STATE.
This poem doesn’t defend anyone’s right; it doesn’t promote respect to the human being or to the HUMAN RIGHTS, and its poemization is totally XENOPHOBIC.
Considering that TEJAS/TEXAS is legally a CHRISTIAN STATE, I feel sorry for those that ignore the teachings of Christ in that NORTHSIDE OF RIO GRANDE of The United States of America.

Just look at the support your rant has provided here. Poets always stand up for the people's right. You are no exception. Illegal is..."against the law" plain and simple. The fact that foreigners come to the land of the free then have the system work for them better than it works for Americans is "against the rights of our fellow Americans". We need to get it together beginning with our President and our Congressmen. It is fierce to say the least but if our politicians want our vote then they need to work for us Americans because...guess what folks? Illegal's CAN'T vote. This seems to be a no brainer when it comes down to re-election.

I had a similar column ran last year in Florida Today, here in Melbourne Fl.
Illigal is just that. As a Native American, We had to give up our language, religion and everything else to keep our lives. Only to have people cross our borders, try to take our jobs and lands, Sounds familiar huh?
It was illigal to teach our language in our schools until 1923 and then we have illigals demand bilingual classes? Not if I have a vote against it.
As previaouly said this is a universal problem that is also affecting Canada as well, with our free medicals and pensions etc we are being bombarded as well. No easy answer though I am afraid.

Except for the P.S. Karla I understood and believe every word. They say that if they weren't here the economy in America would suffer. I don't believe that, most of the illegals are working for cash, no taxes taken out. It is a sham.
It needed to be said and you said it well, Karla. It is damned pathetic when someone can come in to this country illegally and get welfare but our own citizens just somehow don't qualify. We have thousands of Veterans sleeping on our streets because they are unable to afford shelter, but the illegal alien slides right in and is put on the welfare roles, given subsidized housing and food stamps...there is something very wrong with this picture.

I can only speak from a British point of view, but I have seen the immigration problem in California...its swarming with illegal Hispanics !
We have a similar situation here, where our country is swamped with asylum seekers and illegal Muslims...
Most of them are mega rich now, because they cheated the system in every way possible, and the ordinary hard working Brit, will never be rich, no matter how hard he works, and is still down on his luck !
Worse still, these illegal Islamic aliens are the ones who are now extremists terrorists plotting, conspiring and blowing us to Kingdom Come !
I'm glad you had the courage of your convictions !

It is pretty sad when we have to work menial, thankless jobs next to nothing, in order to survive when many other Americans would rather sit around on their asses and do nothing to better themselves. It is also pretty sad when illegal aliens will take any job at great risk to their safety and health because we "rich" Americans WON'T.
It is pretty sad that most of the paperwork is written in English and another language in order to accomodate the needs of the non-English speakers. it is pretty sad that our children are being forced to learn other languages in order to communicate with those who can't or WON'T speak English. Take our former job, for instance: all the people in the back of the restaurant did not speak English, yet they wanted us to learn theirs. I don't think we should have to. Let these people learn OUR language, or get them the hell out of our country; they don't NEED to be here, especially if they are illegals!
