Ugly, ugly write; I'm sorry. I am O U T R A G E D at the Military charging soldiers with MURDER for doing the job expected of them. Might as well give up...we'll never win the war on terror with this mentality.
Might as well bow our necks to the scimitar poised overhead; nothing
can save us now. Might as well let them gouge out our eyes; nobody cares.
Might as well let them kidnap us; we can't escape; there's no hope for us;
we can't kill those who want our heads on a platter - it would be MURDER.
Yet, it is okay for them to use their women and children as shields;
Yet, it is okay for them to use IEDs against our soldiers;
Yet, it is okay for them to torture our men who wear uniforms.
Yet, it is okay - we are the enemy here. We're the INFIDELS.
Something very wrong: America leans to the left, tilting farther,
while men like First Class Privates Menchaca, Tucker and Spec. Babineau
shed their blood in vain: Terrorists win and we lose, afraid of conflict.
Powerful commentary on this strange and inhuman paradox we call war. The sadly brutal thing about it is that the whole purpose of war, no matter how justified, is murder and domination. There's no way to engage one in a civilized manner. Thank you for this thought provoking read.

There's nothing new here Karla however our hearts ( which in essence are pure) cannot abide such ugliness of thought action and reaction..you did a fantastic job here..well done!

Without the real facts of the matter it is difficult to make a measured response. As with the Bedford incident in the 60's.
We are not at war with Iraq. Just there help to form a democracy.
We are at war with terrorists. They need to be delt with professionally. Having a back ground in the military, I have felt the lose of great friends.
But when we sign for any of the forces, in effect we sign our lives away to protect that which we love, the freedom we enjoy.
No one ever really wins a war. They just postpone the reaction.
Like much of my democratic Christian country, a country that has never been socialist, as we are indeed a Realm with a population of over 2 billion subjects.
With such power comes responsibility, and am thus far amazed at the professional restraint shown by her majesties troops... And not a -gun ho- response.
We are Americas only friends, and never ever shy away from conflict.

A very powerful write, Karla! We do understand the outrage and the emotions that led to it and you have turned it into something very well penned! If there only was more one could do... guess, the right for being human and receive descent compassion is given up the moment you are enlisted...

Yep, a most emotive issue but you have controlled all this feeling into excellent poetry, Karla, that makes it's point with grace and conviction. Trouble is, in order to have "justice" and the moral upper hand, as peace-keeping and liberation forces we have to tread the absolute "righteous" high ground, irrespective of acts committed as "crimes of passion", perhaps. I agree with Felix, in that, if the moral issues are becoming so clouded, apart from the rational ones, then it is time to give humanity a break and to pull out - whatever the cost to pride. Where there is no rhyme or reason left, who can make a right out of on-going wrongs? And vice-versa. Emotionally I am so with you... but it is a case of "upholding the Law" and, where things have become sooooooooooo out of control, it seems to me... the Law, as usual, is proving to be an ass. When it comes down to it, we are talking human life here over and above war games. Enough is enough. Back to the drawing board say I. And where are John and Yoko when you need them.... ??!! Thank you for this rant, Karla. I think that there is no room given for the human spirit. These men have been dealt with as though they were machines. Their fellow soldiers were murdered in front of them and yet they are wrong to kill in return. All of this is done to apease a few. If their actions so riled the Iraqis, let them ask us to leave and their fate will be in their own hands. Don't ask us to do a job and then tie our soldier's hands behind their backs. Soldiers are people too! Freedom is not free and there will always be some people lost in war who shouldn't have been...it is war, not a game of paintball. I am angered also, Karla. Those soldiers are good men and to charge them with murder is offensive to me and a slap in the face of every soldier who has ever served with the intention of creating and maintaining freedom.

As a vet, this is a tough one for me, Karla. The vast majority of our troops are extremely honorable, and fight wars very honorably. But if there are a few who knowingly, and the key word is knowingly, kill innocent men, women, or children, then I believe punishment is in order. Otherwise, we become the terrorists, and I don't believe that's what or who we want to be.
I can truly understand your anger and even we easy going Canucks are starting to get bitter about a way in which they just send our troops out as targets. We are fighting an enemy with different moral codes then ours and life has a different value to them.If our governments cannot understand this and give the orders to act accordingly then they should have the decency to pull our troops out of a losing battle where our men's hands are tied.

Might as well. I concur Karla. We have to be oh, so pristine to the murdering SOB's, but then look the other way when they do what they do to us. It is way past time to . . . let our boys take care of business in a way the terrorists will understand.
