Five years later, and the same question remains: Do we remember? Do we forget?
A conundrum of major proportions.
9-11 Redux (Conundrum)
(c) 2005, Revised, 2006, Karla Dorman. ... "Choices, Choices"
I've grown far too comfortable in letting past events move in and become my room-mates; they paint nightmarish scenes on the walls of my retinas, awful things I want to forget. I fall into the past while struggling to get beyond the debris of that day, trapped by the fear of letting go - do I stay? Do I forget? I'm afraid that by forgetting, they will have died in vain. I just do not know what to do. ... "I Still Fall"
the sidewalks rush up to meet me; the sky shimmers endless blue; the canyons still echo with the names as i fall into rememberance. and even after all these years, i still fall, trying to forget.

Karla, no other could have so quietly - but powerfully - put it back, and into perspective..
It's horrifying to dwell there..it can paralyze us.
I believe that is why the Word instructs us to meditate on whatever things are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, of a good report.....where there is anything of virtue, or worthy of praise.
It's how we are to survive, to go forward. If we do not go forward, THEN, they have died in vain.
Forgetting is impossible, Karla, but learning how to move those emotions, attached to that day, to a place where we can eye them occasionally and take a small bite from time to time so that we can digest and process it, is essential. Very beautiful poems.
Take care,
Sherry

I love my mum, but I don't think about her all the time.
I proud we one ww11, but i don't think about it all the time.
Be gentle on yourself.
How can anyone forget? Yet there are those who will try to ,and never prepare for the next 911! It will happen and when it does will it be just another blame thing or will people finally admit we are in a war against Jihadists who want to dominate the world! Well done Karla!

I agree whole heartily with Aberjhani..This was done with such grace and elegance!!
The events of 9/11 proved a priceless lesson in heeding the warnings that are aroumd us everyday. We all paid a price and, for some, their losses became a huge void for their families. We must move on and keep this loss forever upon our day to day. We can't become fools by neglecting the proceless losses 9/11 had for this country. The sacrifices made then will resonate upon our countryside and in our hearts forever more.
Love,
Susan
A very fine portrayal of the psychological fragility that continues to mark many of us in the wake of 9/11. For what the event has come to mean on a global and historical scale, I suspect that forgetting is never going to be an option. But with poems like this one, we can, I feel, carry the memory with strength, grace, and honor.

after all these years,
i still fall,
trying to forget.
I fear we all have certain nightmares that are just too vivid to ever forget. But perhaps, that's the way it's supposed to be.
