I Shall Overcome

Rising from the sorrow
that threatened
to keep me under its
weight, I bloom,
shake myself off and see
the sun of
hope shining in the sky.

That doesn't mean I don't
remember;
my roots were planted there;
however,
it has no power to
keep me down.

And so, I flower, a
bit dusty
now, but beautiful, just
the same...I
am a survivor in
the strongest
sense of what that word means.
