If these words inspire one person to leave an abusive relationship, they will be worth the tears I cried hearing the song "Too Late For Mama" and writing this poem.
She wanted to leave, oh, how she wanted to, but it was too late, too late for Mama.
He struck the face he praised; the one he promised to cherish; it was too late, too late for Mama.
He pinned her to the bed, pinned her against her will, it was too late, too late for Mama.
He held her in an iron fist, he held her too tightly; it was too late, too late for Mama.
They buried her yesterday. She wanted to escape, but it was too late, too late for Mama.
A tear-jerker indeed, Karla. Why do some men behave like animals? We know the answer to that one, don't we. I have often heard it said "Any man who hits a woman is a COWARD!" There is a lot of truth in that, don't you agree, Karla? A strong write, a strong message.
Oh my gosh, this is so sad, and so often too true for so many. I had a friend that I went to high school with. She was a lovely lady with such a warm heart! Her abuse was unknown to the outside world, she worked at a local office where many saw her on a daily basis, always smiling...until we got the news that her husband had shot and killed her infront of their two young children...that's when the abuse came to the ears of friends, family, and the community! Such a sad event, she was too afraid to leave.....
Your write is very realistic, very touching, and so sad! Hope others whom are being or have been abused will listen!
Blessings,
Joyce B.
Karla, this is a profound, powerful, write, I hope those who are suffering abuse at the hands of another will read this poem. Your voice in this piece is marvelous...this reader got chills!
Powerful and very much needed. I am taking the liberty of forwarding the poem to Marcia Duning, head of Angels That Care. Expect you will hear from her before long. People need to read this!! <3 <3 <3 Pea <3 <3 <3
So sad and painful but all too often this is the reality of life for many women and children. The penalties for all types of physical abuse need to be increased to automatic jail terms.
Wow! This is certainly one of your best I have read. Really powerful. Effective repetition throughout. Luck with it. Send it some place. Thanks a million for sharing.
"Pole" is a Kswahili word for sorry. It is said to anybody with a bad fortune ranging from a finger injury to a throat cut. But in the case of this mother I dn't say Pole; I would say: Before God all shall stand equal and Justice shall be meted accordingly. So it has been too late to stop the violence which saw you end up in a grave but never shall judgement day come too late. Soul-touching poem. I love Brenda for her heart-moving songs. Shall remember her with this song.
"I am sorry" comes too easy...and too late.
I wonder what is worst to run and die of hunger or stay and die in the hands of the "love" one?
Don't ask if you can, just run girl, as faster as you can, run!!!
Georg
Too late for many women and a sad commentary to what some think is "Love". Thank God I got away from Rafael before I was a victim of the same fate.
Thank you and bless you!
love,
Susan.
This is so heartbreaking! You may have saved a life today with this powerful pen; to those who live with abuse, I have one thing to say: GET. OUT. And DON'T look back. Keep running; there are people who'll help. Very well done, brava! Love the picture!
