when the smoke ran like water
that day of the terrorist strike
it affected all of us
it forever altered our psyche
when the smoke ran like water
advancing like an evil thing
chasing people down the streets
in nightmares, the image clings
when the smoke ran like water
marring an otherwise blue sky
we could not help but wonder
oh, God...how many have just died
when the smoke ran like water
an evil, pyroclastic flow
storming across the landscape
like a blizzard of dirty snow
when the smoke ran like water
obscuring all in bitter ash
suddenly, day turned to night
when the mighty twin towers collapsed
when the smoke ran like water
pouring through the hole in our heart
don't think we'll get over it...
it ripped all of our lives apart
when the smoke ran like water
it got into all of our eyes
tears poured down, never to end
we were left numb and paralyzed
