the flashing of lightning
the crashing of thunder
rainfall slashes against the walls
my heartbeat is pounding
and the tears are flowing
outside rages a sudden squall

and the nightmare returns
it wakes me once again
and that's when i remember you
because of you i lived
'cause you wouldn't give up
you said you had a job to do

it all happened so fast
it was time to go--NOW
i was on the sixtieth floor
it was a long trek down
and i wanted to rest
you said, only a little more

a fireman you were
a business man i was
caught in this terror together
but you encouraged me
with your courage and strength
bonded like birds of a feather

and somehow i got out
that awful, awful day
it was because of you i lived
when the tower collapsed
a part of me did, too
in nightmares the terror's relived

they finally found you
there amidst the concrete
they say you died a hero's death
somehow, i understand
but that don't take the pain
it's because of you i have breath

and the nightmares return
they wake me yet again
i don't think i even thanked you
because of you, i lived
'cause you went back inside
you said you had a job to do
