Dylan Thomas wrote a poem 'Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night' urging his dying father to fight to the end. Although it's a lovely poem, I never agreed. This one is for my father, who, sadly, is near death this week at 83 years of age.
Do go gentle into that night For the night is of the scheme The great scheme is divine And will not be altered But enacted line by line.
Do go gentle into that night Against what is fact, why fight? Be glad you laughed Be glad you loved, That you lived a life with light.
Do go gentle into that mute night It is the Maker who holds the keys To the great kingdom And all its delights He needs neither raves nor pleas.
(Extra Verse)
Dad, go gentle into that night Even though you'll leave a void For step by step We tread close behind Toward our own asteroid.
Another night poem I pulled up, kind of sad too but loved it. They say the time is darkest before the dawn. My mother told me this one night when I was a teen and my Dad was ill after heart surgery and would not sleep all night and we sat up talking. Mom just left him in that chair and said If he wants to set up all night, what can I do. He only lasted 2 years after his heart surgery and did on his 64th birthday. I know he was stubborn after his surgery and gave mom a rough time, but she loved him. This poem brought bakc memories of him. They say the spirit of dead ones never leaves you you see or hear something to bring them back. Thanks.
Awe Randall my friend, this one tugged at my heart...beautiful write and I agree when the end is so near, and they've made their peace with God...only good things are ahead for that loved one...a void here within our heart will be left for our loss, but look at what they've gained...Heaven and eternal life where we have the choice to meet them when our appointed time comes...a simply divine write dear friend. Prayers with you both...

I believe it was M. Scott Peck who said Dylan Thomas was an excellent poet but not such an excellent psychologist. Your own DO GO GENTTLE keeps company with your father's soul in a very beautiful and relevant way. Such love is the bridge that makes the journey one of divine joy instead of earth-bound pain. Much peace and many blessings to you and yours,

I couldn't agree more, dear Randall.
"May God bless you and keep you,
may he make his face to smile upon you,
may he lift up the light of his countenance
upon you and give you peace."
Love & Light always and in all ways,

Randall,
This is beautiful, spiritual and heartfelt a tribute to your father and your love of him.... Thank you for sharing this poem and always be blessed for his love he gave you while your together and later parted for a bit..In My Prayers.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
