A tribute to Louis Henry Teller

Poem Artwork

Steel Ponies

The ponies of Native Americans of old
Symbols of power and strength untold
Antiquated in this modern day
Still your very being found a way

Your father was so very proud
His steel pony set him above the crowd
A motorcycle of brilliant blue
And to his forefathers he would be true

Though death took him when you were young
His devotion to steel ponies still lived on
A passion passed from the heavens above
Maybe your genes themselves carried the love

Your steel pony set you free
From California to New York City
A young man trying to find himself
Or maybe just your history, itself

With brothers of the road you bonded
And friendships for life were spawned
With Jeff and Ross you did band
And to this day your friends still stand

It was no surprise as your own sons grew
The fires of old flamed anew
For the oldest, the ponies would be an obsession
And even for the younger, the road did beckon

You wondered what legacy you would leave
What part of you they would receive
Your very heritage envelops their souls
And steel ponies have made them whole

On this final journey to your resting place
Your sons and friends set the pace
Your own purple pony leads the way
And, no surprise, your grandson straddles it today

As the thunder rolls, we think of you
Both hooves and engines roaring through
An endowment from generations past
And so
on steel ponies the die is cast

One does get addicted to those steel ponies but they are as dangerous as hell. Lost my grandson when a semi didn't see him and now he's long dead. One mistake is all it takes.

Great tribute. I used to see so many of these powerful steel ponies, as you call them but not so much lately. Times change I suppose. Victor

This is a very moving tribute, RaeLynn. As I read this poem, I could feel the obvious affection you still have for Louis. By sharing this tribute, you'll allowed us to appreciate his life, as well.

Beautiful work.

Thanks,
Jill

I can think of no finer tribute to this man who you so obviously thought so much of. Yes the steel pony lives for a lot of us as the freedom of the road. Nice work here Raelyn...love it.
