Who are we really, and why?

 Aliens where?

I am debating, insight to gain

Why our species creates so much pain

When to superior intellect lay claim

Yet so morally insane

I am debating, and searching my own

And find myself, some pain have sown

But generally on that do frown

And quickly then such longing drown

Yet I found it all around

And by that, I was all astound

Much to culture it was bound

Like hunting and the hound

Come to think now twice this week

Read stories that made me weep

Two that steeped in history deep

One just recently a treat

A cultural icon so to speak

In the news this week

Shooting flocks of pigeons like shooting skeet

Considered a great sport indeed

What  really ghastly at display

Involved the kids who found it play

Stumped the struggling pigeons just like clay

And adults joined the fray

Great sport, they found

Stump still live pigeons to the ground

Relished screeches all around

Nothing, but pain abound

I asked myself have they no heart

In such cruelty do take part

Of such cruel sport make art

Like an arrow it pierced my heart

No matter how such frenzy started

And from common sense departed

And cruelty rewarded

Off to asylums should be carted

In the state and towns of William Penn

On their calendar how and when

Townsfolk gather boys and men

To participate in this cultural gem

Why are they at the pigeons mad?

Were they once to them so bad?

To make revenge so glad

To make such cruel practise fad

Fun to them it might well be

Certainly not to me

With heavy heart such place would flee

And rather then with aliens be

A different sport in Spain

Similarly insane

Intend to give the Bull some pain

So man could glory gain

Aliens it seems indeed

Thousands in their seat

Shout and cry the deed

The ravaged bull now at their feet

And when the deed is done

Celebrate with wine and song

Bloodthirsty still the throng

Find each other might and strong

You guessed it yes indeed

Fulfills a primal human need

Their primitive fears so to defeat

No aliens did I meet

Not to far, a league away

Satanic rituals found their way

Their prowess did display

Cats from towers threw away

Cheering townsfolk even then

Celebrated pain and death and Satan’s ken

And worshiped dancing in his den

On cobbled streets or glen

Not alien folk, that do the killing

Our species all too willing

From cruel factory farms our stomachs filling

To watch such gluttony is chilling

Was it ever understood?

That supposedly civilized he should

Show kindness, to the week he would

If his soul would bear he could

Tell me know then what excuse

Our species has for this abuse

Or are aliens on the loose

This I leave for you to muse!

I don't know if they're aliens in the sense of aliens, but their behavior is alien to me. That of which you speak is not sport, it is cruelty, cruelty, cruelty. When there were gladiators, the same behavior was exhibited - cruelty. I just don't understand.

God bless you. Kathy

I sadly seem to ponder that same question more and more these very sad days. We are taught that we are 'God's Children,' yet so many of us seem to routinely act like the 'Devil's Spawn.' Are we really created in God's image, or are we human beings inherently evil?

And that picture gets to me every time.

Moving and poignant. If you get time, look at my "Immortally Wounded" about another "bird/man" experience. I like your writing.

The only "aliens" I see are the ones on TV. We, on the other hand, are created in God's image. :) Not descended from pondscum, from monkeys...God's children. Even though the majority of us don't act like Him...an excellent, thought provoking write, Jasmin, very well penned.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
