It's darn cold out there all alone in the woods!

Here today and gone tomorrow, spread an little joy, instead of sorrow!

It’s darn cold out there all alone in the woods!

This being the real first cold day

Through woods and thicket made my way

My pockets filled with nuts and seed

My little friends to feed

So many friends have I now gathered

I’m barely there, I hear their chatter

One by one slowly, and with hesitation still,

Tenderly approach to get their fill

It don’t take long and they remember

I was there just this last December

All surround my feet and hands

With this old fool they’ll take a chance

I spread some more on leaving for another

Stop, for there are many that need the fodder

Some actually remember well

And not to shy to tell

Tweet and fly across my face

Make sure I slow my pace

And there another little bunch

Gathers to have free lunch

Some warm their little hands and feet

Stay some longer to catch some heat

There is this tiny little tyke

Its foot is dangling by its side

Pay special attention to such need

And give it extra feed

That makes my day

It another day can stay

Further down the road get my reward in laughter

This little feisty one she knew what she was after

I’d fought my way through brush and thicket

Not out in public want to stick it

An old oak tall and round

There relief I found

Busy with and full at hand

Behind the oak I stand

I thought what’s all that twitter

Above my head that little critter

Was unconcerned my disposition

For a handout it was fishing

Across the branch and Eye to Eye

Just barely got up my fly

On my pocket it would land

Never mind the hand

Hurriedly pull up the zipper

And caught my little nipper

Now wounded and in pain

And rivulets of yellow stain

Ah well I thought not her fault

I should’ve food when she had called

Left some extra for a pardon

And escaped that little warden

On the main again thereafter

Broke out in inadvertent laughter

In front of me I clearly see

That feisty little chickadee

From branch to branch would fly and talk

As I carried on my walk

Now and then take off my mitts

To quieten down its fits

In mirth and laughter all the way

Here and there would stay

For sure it had its fill today

Now heading home without delay
