Ever raging torrent of white water,
Buffeted about, the life raft I am on,
Hurrying to nowhere, maybe a rock,
Maybe a calm eddy, or raging sea,
What awaits I cannot see,
Strong arms at times, I take the oar,
But in my sleep those raging waters roar,
Lead me on, forward always, forward,
Time has passed along the way,
Tears at my strengths and my intend,
Whereto does the river bend?
Will my will survive this trip alive,
And in that waking sleep, the watchman watches,
A lantern of hope his soul it holds,
Time is still, I’m in control,
Whereto my friend, I ask, and steer,
Fighting all the way my fear,
Did I succeed, and to what end,
Stayed a moment in that bend,
Still pushing forward on and on,
No stopping time, what was, is gone,
That final drop to that abyss,
How could I even miss?
My friend, who followed me along the way,
In different eddies would he play,
But still as time went on, currents fast would catch,
His raft of life, and moved it on,
Hurried in its way, would pass me by,
And like mine, would fall, where horizons meet the sky,
Together in that ocean now, to deep to fathom,
Other friends we meet, wisdom in their laughter,
Overheard said one, I played the waves and here I am,
The other said I struggled with that oar,
Would in the end a difference make, so thought I,
I see now clearly, being here with you, it was all a lie.
