My real reason for adopting this land, the United States of America

My Pledge of Allegiance

I kissed the soil when I first landed here

In the airport I blessed this land with cheer

I was not looking for a job or for a niche

Not for gold, for success or to be rich

I was just proud of my new place

The United States, I felt the grace

Since my childhood, before being adult

I was proud, because of the result

Of America’s aid to humanity

At the time of war’s insanity

Those who do not understand

Why I deeply love this land

One day will grasp my saying

That just myself I was obeying

Fulfilling my 1942 promise

To the soldiers we now miss

From New York, from Pennsylvania

From Illinois, Montana, California…

I visited their country the United States

And made it my home, with love and faith.

Many of us who were born here do not understand the meaning of freedom, and how it impacts our lives. You who lived without freedom are the ones who have the greatest appreciation when you come to "America, the land of the free." Thank you for sharing!

I think I love this one the best. I don't understand why people come to the united states and then be so cruel about the country they make their home. I feel very lucky to live in the US- I realize I am naive in many ways, but I am thankful to be here raising my family.
We need to teach our youth to be proud of our country for the good and get involved to change the things we need to change.

I was born at end of the Depression; I remember WWII (and succeding wars); I remember those, right here in our country, giving of their lives to enable ALL people here to live a better life; I remember...
but it is rewarding to know those who CHOSE this country to be their own; to know their thoughts and appreciation to be the same as mine.
Beautiful and insipiring poem of confirmation, Emile!

I live in hopes that all of my children (those born here and those not) will always be proud to be Americans...
Thanks for sharing your poignant thoughts on this subject with us, Emile.

Another American who is proud of his Country and what it stands for, with all its blemishes, is still an immigrants haven., as it was for my mom and dad when they came from Ireland.
