THE PAST

you think you don’t think of the past
but you do
the past you avoid has become part of you

the times you loved and were betrayed
you try to forget
but memories have stubbornly stayed

locked away in some dreaded dark place
reminiscence lives
silent sculptor of the past is your grace

you say you never dwell on the past
but you do
for the past is forever following you

teaching you wisdom, enriching your soul
in reflective moments
the past resurrects and exacts its toll

i wonder, why do you fight reality so
the past is not past
as wiseman and shaman well know

let the tide of what was, wash over your soul
the past is a friend
you won’t regress or lose control

embrace the lessons, embrace the pain
concentrate drops of joy
in accepting life’s losses there is gain

you think you don’t think of the past
but you do
the past you avoid has become part of you

the part of you that is wise and true
survived the past
and became a creature beautiful and new

why do you fear it? why do you run?
the past created
the special person you’ve become

DJ, this comes from a very deep place in your soul. You are one amazing poet, filled with compassion as well as passion.
I love the way that you remind us that the past is part of the present, but one shouldn't dwell in the past, just embrace it and move on.
