we never felt wasted
we gave
and gave
and gave
sometimes we received
more than we could stomach
still we wiped our plate clean
soaked up every word
every touch
every kiss

hoods
cloaks
we cover our essence
we never leave the house unprotected
a dagger ready to be drawn at the first
kind word that hits us unawares
stabs our hearts
threatens us
to die unshielded at the hand of love
