One Trail's Lesson

We can't force our convictions on others; even our own children. My 23 year old and I clashed a year ago and both learned an important lesson. Amazingly we have not had a disagreement since. Life's lessons can be so hard at times. But when a lesson is learned, it becomes priceless.

My boy, I am so very sorry,
For losing my temper with you last night;
I let the devil get the best of me,
That is no excuse, it was not right.

You are not a child anymore,
You have become a man for sure;
I just want what is best for you,
Please know my intentions were pure.

I was only trying to teach you,
I guess I tried in the wrong way;
I have faith in your intelligence,
I know you’ll find His path one day.

Along your trails I will be there,
To teach you what you want to know;
But the choice is yours in the end,
You must decide which way you'll go.

If at times I seem to pressure you,
Please understand, it’s because I care;
We clash because we’re both stubborn,
Sometimes I just need to breath more air.

You know, we can help each other,
While traveling along life’s trails;
We can both learn from our mistakes,
To see that neither one of us fails.

You are my son and I love you,
Together we can both be strong;
But without help from each other,
That can only lead us both wrong.

I believe that what happened last night,
Though we both know it sure wasn’t fun;
Was a valuable lesson in life,
Sent to us both from Jesus the Son.

My boy, I don’t want to fight with you,
It would be better if we shared our love;
Face it, we both have come a long way,
With the help of God's gift from above.

Let’s leave that mistake behind us,
Take one step and one day at a time;
I am here whenever you need me,
And I know that we will be just fine.

So now, be sure you follow your dreams,
For once in awhile they do come true ;
Especially with our Lord in your heart,
He’s there with whatever you try to do.

The good lord has blessed you and your son very much. He has given you each other to learn from and to help each other. Peace can be obtained by both of you and lessons learned stay with us and that helps us to be better persons.

A very touching and inspiring write, a lesson that all parents learn along this way. I too have had those arguements with my children, and when the storm calms...relize that my children are their own independent person with their own dreams, desires, and goals...those of which are not always goals, desires and dreams of our own, and other times we are not included...a hard lesson, but one if parents haven't encountered they will...well done, a beautiful write from the heart indeed! A wise write as well!
Blessings,
Joyce B.

Wow, very touching and tender. A father's love is always protective and caring...Amen to that for there are many who've never felt how it feels to have a dad much so be loved by him...

Paul, this poem touches me more than any I've ever read. It is one most all parents can benefit from. I personally find it is so hard for a mother to stop mothering and that motherly concern has caused so many flareups between me and my son. This poem has a wonderful message that serves as valuable advice. With your permission, I'd like to give my son a copy.

Paul this is priceless and remember we all go through this as we raise our children for the same reason because we want only the best for them. It is hard to step back and let them pave their own road for fear they may get lost but we did and with help, look at us today. Thank you for sharing these are the things that make us better people, being able to say I am sorry with the continuence of love.
