A variation of Chapter 1 from MYSTERIOUS TRAILS OF AMERICAN FOLKLORE. While researching tales from Alabama,
I found this little known local story that supposedly took place somewhere in a small rural town high up in the mountains during the mid to late 1950s. Whether it took place or not doesn't really matter; it sure makes a really interesting tale. God bless you all.
A man went to a barber shop
Simply to get a haircut and trim
A conversation was started
As the barber began to work on him
They talked about different things
No subject seemed to be too hard
But when they talked of religion
The barber said, "There is no God!"
"How can you say that?" asked the man "Look around town," the barber said "Children get sick, there's so much pain
You're foolish to think God's not dead"
The customer thought about that
But to avoid an argument
Let the barber finish his work
Paid for the cut and out he went
Shortly after he left the shop
He spied a man with unkempt hair
Another with an untrimmed beard
Unkempt folk were everywhere
The man went back into the shop
Told the barber, "You don't exist!
I guess that barbers just aren't real
I have the proof, I'll make a list"
The shocked barber said to the man "I just finished cutting your hair
How can you say such a stupid thing
How can you come back here and dare?"
"No, you barbers simply aren't real"
The customer yelled back at him "People out there have long dirty hair
And many with their beards untrimmed"
"Now I see" the barber yelled out "I can explain the things you see
Those people are filthy because
They all refuse to come to me!"
"Exactly, my friend!" said the man "And that is the whole point of this
People refuse to come to Him
So, you see, our God does exist!"

I have no problem at all in beleiving that God exists, it beleiving in religeon I have have a lot of trouble with,
you see though it may make no sence to anyone but me, I beleive that religeon was created by man, and is therefore contradictory and hypocritical, a good way to control the masses though,
where as man himself was created by God, I see no other explanation for the variety and beauty around me.
I really did enjoy your story, and as you say wether it is true or not is of little importance, it makes a very good point.
