The forest seems quiet today
Not a single sound can be heard
No footfalls of a deer or moose
Or even the song of a bird

They know that something's going on
Instinct tells them it just feels wrong
Then the smell suddenly hits them
The pungent odor's very strong

They sense the fire in the distance
They know where it's heading today
They freeze trying to figure out
How they might get out of its way

Their very lives are in danger
And those within their families
Every ground dwelling creature
And those that live within the trees

The fire is all too consuming
It burns and shows no mercy at all
It will kill the smallest insects
And cause the tallest trees to fall

The heat will create crazy winds
That won't follow any known rule
And it will reach out in hunger
As it is searching for fresh fuel

Maybe someone dropped a lit match
Or forgot to drown a camp fire
This forest filled God's animals
Could become a funeral pyre

Yes, we can prevent forest fires
As there are so many lives at stake
Never let our kids play with matches
Drown our camp fires for everyone's sake
