But give me the old U.S. routes
For a scenic look at our past

Along the old U.S. Route 3
You will find the old time diner
Hand pressed burgers, fresh cut French fries
Can't think of a meal much finer

A few more miles along that route
You will find an old time railroad
Coaches from the Roaring Twenties
Old engines that burn a coal load

Then there's the old U.S. Route 1
Hugs the coast all the way to Maine
I drove that route many a time
Seen sights you can't see from a plane

Don't forget the most famous route
The one that's named Route 66
I drove it to Oklahoma
When asked, "Yes, I did get my kicks"

Steinbeck called it the Mother Road
Known too as the Highway of Dreams
Connects Chicago to L.A.
Both appropriate names it seems

Great places were born on these routes
But too soon came the Interstate
Some boomtowns died rather quickly
Others dealt with the hand of fate

I'll take these old routes any day
Just to get out of the rat race
Try them out, I think you'll like them
Hit the road at a leisurely pace
